Yet again there is a twist to the whole Drake being signed to a record label.
Drake has been making it well known that his recording home is Universal Republic, when his recording home may actually be Universal Motown.
According to Billboard, Motown reps have requested that Drake's chart credits that he receives be credited to Motown and not Universal Republic. As I recently reported previously, Drake told Fader magazine, “I went through Universal Republic because I don’t fuck with Motown, at all.”
There are many conflicting reports from Drake's camp and Motown's. A source that is close to Drake reported that Drake is indeed signed to Republic, while Motown is distributing the album. The source also stated that president Sylvia Rhone seeks to take “credit for anything involving Drake.” Now at first the bitch wanted nothing to do with Drake. But now that she sees his buzz is bigger than any other artist that ever came out, she wants to take part in his project. Get the fuck out of here. I can't stand people like her honestly.
Universal's source tells Billboard that Drake's recording deal with Republic was never yet finalized, and for him to alert the media of such was very premature. The source states the move to Motown was a last minute thing, and they don't exactly know what prompted the move. Motown may also have first choice on Young Money and Cash Money artist despite artist preference, for contractual reasons.
As stated before in my recent article of events, Drake's issue with the president of Universal, Sylvia Rhone, stemmed from two or three years ago, before linking with Lil Wayne. After an audition in New York, she passed on signing him.
Drake states his feelings about the event that occurred in his song "Say What's Real", off of the mix tape So Far Gone. “”I’ve always been something that these labels can’t buy/especially if they trying to take a piece of my soul/and Sylvia be telling ‘Tez, ‘Damn, Drake fly’/and he just be like, ’silly motherfucker, I know/That was your bad, how could you pass up on him?”
Well after evaluating the whole situation, I think signing with Universal or Young Money or Cash Money, is the same thing as signing with Diddy and Bad Boy. Basically in the end you will get fucked. I guess the only label that has treated their artist great was Def Jam. (maybe?)
